What is Planet Word?

Planet Word is a unique museum wedding venue in DC where "language comes to life." In case that was confusing, here's their mission statement:

“Planet Word will inspire and renew a love of words, language, and reading in people of all ages. Through unique, immersive learning experiences, we provide a space to explore words and language that is grounded in a solid understanding of language arts and science.”

In other words, it's like no other museum in DC or wedding venue in DC. There also haven't been many weddings there, so yours could be one of the first! They also describe the museum as fun, playful, unexpected so your wedding would also be fun, playful, and unexpected (of course).

Check out these images from a wedding portrait session I photographed there.

Event Spaces at Planet Word

The event spaces feature grand windows, intricate ironwork, and lofty ceilings. Some of your options include the Mansard Room (with "beautiful exposed beams, wood floors, and frescoed walls), the Rooftop Terrace (with "views north and west across verdant Franklin Square and the rooftops of the K Street Corridor"), and The Great Hall (the "architectural centerpiece" of the museum, "featuring 14 floor-to-ceiling windows and an enormous LED globe.")

Every rental include five hours with load in and load out time as well as an event captain. You can also buyout the entire museum if you're super fancy.

Here's some more info about what each space can be used for:

Mansard Room

The Mansard Room is great for a seated dinner and can accommodate 16 circular tables with 144 seated guests

Rooftop Terrace

The Rooftop Terrace is a perfect fit for a small cocktail hour and accommodates 50 people.

The Great Hall

The Great Hall fits 19 circular tables for 152 total seated guests.

A few more options include the Welcome Lobby and AT&T Plaza.

AT&T Plaza

“Anchored by Speaking Willow, an interactive sculpture from renowned artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, the AT&T plaza is a ground level courtyard oasis just off K Street. The space includes a raised platform at the South end suitable for speakers or a small band. The AT&T Plaza can be combined with the Friedman Family Auditorium for a pre- performance or post-performance reception.”

It has a standing capacity of 278.

Welcome Lobby

"Our delightful Welcome Lobby makes a flexible gathering place: its welcome desk can double as a bar and the glass-enclosed entry vestibule can serve as a check-in area. The space features graceful details like the iconic arches that define the Franklin School, and terrazzo floors embedded with a swirling design of written symbols from the past to the present. The Welcome Lobby can be combined with the AT&T Plaza or the Friedman Family Auditorium for larger events, or can serve as a pre-dinner cocktail space when combined with the Great Hall."

It has a standing capacity of 100.
