Have you heard about the National Union Building? No? Well, prepare yourself.
The National Union Building is located at 918 F Street Northwest Washington, DC 20004 in the heart of Penn Quarter, near the old General Post Office, Patent Building, and Ford’s Theater, and a five minute walk from Chinatown. It was constructed in 1890 it was recognized by The National Register of Historic Places in 1990, a century later. It is also recognized by me as a wonderful wedding venue.
Here’s some more precise architectural terminology from their detailed website because that’s really not my area of expertise…
“The cast stone Romanesque facade has many beautiful details of this classical style: rustication, hierarchy of order in arches, and fluted pendants framing the building’s core where the original owners proudly displayed their name: National Union Building.”
There are a variety of unique spaces throughout the building’s multiple floors (which make for amazing photo locations), one of which might be perfect for your wedding. Some of these spaces are rustic or have “rustication” (I’ve never heard that word until I wrote this post).

There are comfortable couches for the guests to lounge on. Very comfortable. You sink into them and never want to get up again (until there’s cake). Speaking of cake (drool), you can see some of my absolute favorite bakers in my Best Vendors list.
You see? I told you the couch was comfortable. It’s nap-worthy. Honestly, everyone should take a nap at some point during the wedding reception.
There’s even some quiet space across the foyer (foy-yay) where guests can escape the loud music and enjoy some conversation. I’m not much of a dancing guy myself, so I always appreciate spaces like this.
