Each year, the Lunar New Year brings some of the most visually striking celebrations in the DC metro area and for the past two years, I've had the pleasure of photographing the Rosslyn Lunar New Year Festival for the Rosslyn Business Improvement District.
Several hundred people crowded into Central Place Plaza near the Rosslyn Metro station. Held just across the river from DC, it had everything that makes public cultural celebrations genuinely fun to photograph: color, movement, spontaneous moments, and the kind of authentic energy that no amount of staging can replicate. My job was to capture all of it, the performances, the crowd reactions, the small interactions between strangers sharing a celebration, in a way that gives the Rosslyn BID content they can use for marketing, social media, and future event promotion.
Outdoor public events like this one present their own set of challenges. Lighting changes fast, the action is unpredictable, and there's no controlling the background. That's also what makes them rewarding - the best shots come from staying ready and reading the room rather than waiting for a setup. For an organization like a Business Improvement District, strong event photography does double duty: it documents the event itself and communicates the vitality of the neighborhood to residents, businesses, and visitors.
The Rosslyn BID does excellent work activating the area with public programming, and the Lunar New Year Festival is a great example of the kind of event that benefits from professional photography - not just for the record, but to show the community what's possible when a neighborhood comes together.
If your organization hosts public events, cultural celebrations, or community programming in the DC and Northern Virginia area, I'd love to help document them. Get in touch to discuss your upcoming event.
